As of today I am beginning my journey.
I am a 37yr old divorced mother of a 12yr old son. But I am working on getting into a American Sign Language Interpreting Training Program (ASL ITP, from now on) at Suffolk County Community College, NY. ASL is the 3rd largest recognized language in the US and has the least amount of interpreters for it.
And yes I am hearing.
I have been fascinated with ASL ever since I saw Linda on Sesame Street. My parents would also take me and my 2 elder sisters to the Mill Neck School for the Deaf annual Apple Festival. I came to appreciate the beauty and complexity of ASL.
For years, when everything else was hard for me to learn growing up. ASL was easy. It took me a long time to finally realize that this was my career. But I am glad I have.
This blog is not only for the 'older' students out there. But for those who are thinking about an ASL ITP. Comments and feedback will be appreciated, within reason.
